At Water Hygiene Solutions, we create Chlorine Dioxide (ClO2) by mixing Hydrochloric Acid (HCl) and Sodium Chlorite (NaClO2) in a reaction chamber within our Chlorine Dioxide (ClO2) dosing systems.

What is Hydrochloric Acid?

The chemical compound hydrochloric acid (HCl) is the aqueous (water- based) solution of hydrogen chloride gas (HCl). It is a strong acid, the major component of gastric acid and of wide industrial use.

Hydrochloric acid (HCl) must be handled with appropriate safety, as it is a highly corrosive liquid. Hydrochloric acid (HCl), or muriatic acid by its historical but sometimes still used name, has been an important and frequently used chemical from early history (when it was discovered by the alchemist Jabir Ibn Hayyan in around 800AD!)

Hydrogen Chloride , also known as HCl, is a highly corrosive and toxic, colourless gas that forms white fumes on contact with humidity. These fumes consist of hydrochloric acid (HCl) which forms when hydrogen chloride (HCl) dissolves in water. WHS take extra steps to ensure that these chemicals are handled and maintained with extra care when installing our bespoke systems.

What is Sodium Chlorite?

Sodium Chlorite (NaClO2) is a chemical compound used primarily in the disinfection of water system aiding in the prevention of Legionella and other water bourne bacterium. It is also widely used in the manufacturing of paper and as a disinfectant.

Sodium Chlorite (NaClO2) appears as a white crystalline solid. It is difficult to burn, but accelerates the burning of organic substances. It forms explosive mixtures when mixed with certain combustible materials, it may also explode under prolonged exposure to heat or fire.

The main application of sodium chlorite (NaClO2) is in the disinfection of water systems after conversion to chlorine dioxide. An advantage of this application over chlorine (Cl) is that trialomethanes, which are environmental pollutants such as chloroform (CHCl3), are not produced. Sodium chlorite (NaClO2) is also us for the stripping of textiles, pulp and paper after conversion to chlorine dioxide (ClO2).

Sodium chlorite (NaClO2) can also can also be combined with zinc chloride and then used as a component in therapeutic rinses, toothpastes, mouthwashes and as a preservative in eye drops.
