Cleaning Gravity Feed Tanks

Gravity feed tanks generally supply water to outlets such as sinks, toilets, baths and showers and often feed the hot water heater (cylinder) to provide make-up to the hot water system. They can also provide water to drinking water outlets, or at least outlets from which people may drink.

Tanks can harbour silt and sediment; these can act as nutrient sources for bacteria. Legionella can multiply in tanks and can then spread throughout a system and cause significant problems and ill health.  Other bacteria can taint the taste and smell of the water and where drinking water outlets are fed from the tank they can make the water unpalatable and potentially bad for the health. This is why cleaning gravity feed tanks is so essential, through means of chlorination.

We of course do not expect tanks to be drained by the client, and we perform a full contact chlorination, wherever possible, to fully meet the British Standard (BS8558) with digital chlorine readings and photographs of the tank before and after cleaning.

We are also aware of issues such as airlocks within gravity fed systems and will ensure that the system is fully operational prior to leaving site.
